This version is particularly useful when studying bacterial growth patterns without the potential inhibitory effect of salt on certain strains. The medium supports the growth of both lactose and non-lactose fermenters, with lactose fermenters typically producing pink colonies due to acid production, while non-lactose fermenters appear colourless.
